What to Pack First When Moving?

August 05,2020

Moving is exciting but packing is not so fun. Packing can be extremely time-consuming and frustrating. Too often, people leave packing for the last day and end up surprised to learn that they underestimated how long it takes to pack. In addition to moving, we do a lot of packing here at National Movers, so we have decided to share some tips to make your packing experience as stress-free and smooth sailing as possible. If you still have questions or concerns after reading this article, then feel free to give us a call at National Movers. Our friendly representatives are always happy to help. We can also schedule an appointment if you would like to hire professional packers and movers.

Preparation Comes First

Before you dive into the packing, be sure to plan and prepare so that the packing process is seamless. We recommend that you prepare a packing calendar as well as a packing list to organize your days and inventory. Breaking down the project into bite-sized chunks can fight the feeling of being overwhelmed. Don’t forget to buy the necessary supplies such as cardboard boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers, and other packing supplies.
As you go room to room, make a list of all of your items with one category for essentials, another for non-essentials, and the last for items to be sold or donated. You can also choose to have one list but mark each item individually with the aforementioned categories. Once your list is ready, you can get started on packing slowly but surely.

Divide Packing into Three Waves

Start packing a month in advance so that you have enough time to comfortably pack. Setting aside half an hour to an hour a day should be more than enough to have everything handled by moving day, but, of course, this depends on the size of your house and the number of items you have.
During the first wave of packing, you should work on packing:

  • Out-of-season items such as holiday clothing and decorations.
  • Surplus items such as extra linens, towels, and office supplies.
  • Décor and collectibles.
  • Special kitchenware that you do not use regularly.

On to wave two:

  • Games, toys, jewelry, and electronics.
  • Bathroom supplies and kitchen equipment.
  • Extra clothing and shoes except for a couple weeks of things to wear.
  • Curtains, rugs, and other accessory furniture.

Almost done. Wave three can be handled during the last week to cap things off:

  • Furniture and appliances should be moved to a central location.
  • Bed and bedding can be packed. Maybe keep the mattress for the last day.
  • Cleaning supplies and remaining toiletries.

Find Your Moving Company
You are going to need some wheels to bring all of those items to your new location. Be sure to arrange a moving company in advance because trucks can be unavailable during peak moving seasons. National Movers is a trusted moving company with services such as packing and loading. Give us a call if you would like to schedule your truck today.
