Moving to a new home or business is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful and tiring. Many people decide to leave the packing, loading, and/or moving to the professionals for this reason. But National Movers knows that there is a lot involved in choosing a moving company. It can be tempting to just select the first option that you find, but we urge you to do your due diligence to make sure you are picking the best choice for you. And remember: the best choice for someone else might not be the best choice for you. If you have any specific questions or concerns, then feel free to call National Movers. Our professionals are always happy to help.
Check Their Insurance
Like many companies, moving companies should carry liability insurance to cover any damages during the move. You probably have expensive electronics, furniture, and glassware that can break. There is a lot that can go wrong during a move, especially if it is between states. Don’t leave them at luck’s mercy. Find out what sort of insurance the moving company has, what might not be insured, and the process of filing a claim.
Check Their License
Yes, the drivers should have a driver’s license, but we are talking about a moving company license. Interstate movers must be registered with the Federal Government and meet all of the necessary standards and regulations. You can even use the moving company’s license number to check the company’s complaint history on the U.S. Transportation Agency website.
Do They Subcontract?
Subcontracting is not necessarily a bad thing and might even be a good thing in some instances as some subcontractors specialize in a specific task and provide exceptional service. But, it is important that you learn about the subcontractor just as you learn about the moving company itself.
Are They Experienced?
Practice makes perfect. Ask the moving company about their experience with your type of move. Are you moving internationally? The moving company should be familiar with customs and declarations processes. Are you moving into a high-rise building? The moving company should be comfortable navigating stairs, tight corners, and narrow spaces.
Check Their References
You can ask the moving company for a list of references but don’t rely too much on these references. The company may cherry-pick the right reference. If they are not comfortable giving you a list of options, then consider checking their online reviews. Be fair, though. Read a good number of reviews and don’t target “bad reviews” only. Sometimes customers can be spiteful.
Get A Firm Price Quote
An honest, experienced, and professional business should be able to give you a firm price estimate. They should also be willing to tell you that they will not vary a specific amount above the quoted price. Be sure to get all of this in writing!
